How to choose the right laptop for you?

Most people today need a laptop for various things, mainly for work or study. I’m also often asked what brand is ‘the best’ and to be honest, in 2025 picking the right brand isn’t too difficult to do. Now you might walk into your local JB-HI-FI and get overwhelmed by the plethora of laptops with there big yellow and red price tags yelling at you. I’m here to help find you the machine that will suit your needs. There are a few key factors that I’d take into account when picking a device.

Storage - SSD is ESSENTIAL
HDD! M2! SSD! - ‘hey mate, I’d just like to purchase something that has enough storage for my photos and files!!!’ - don’t let these terms scare you. If you see the word HDD, look at the next best thing. HDD (also known as Hard Disk Drive) is a manually moving disk within an enclosure which stores your data. Most people don’t know that these things are the first to go in your Laptop/PC with an average life span of 2 years. Not only do these things cause your computer to be slower over time, they aren’t even fast out of the box in 2025. (HDD’s were invented in the late 50’s!!!)

This is why you MUST find a device that has an SSD or M2 SSD device - these store your data on a chip, instead of a manual rotating disk. Not only are these 10x faster than your average HDD, they’ll last for 5+ years. Gone are the days of the spinny loading wheel with these bad boys!
Processor - The Brains of the Operation
Intel is a brand you’ve probably heard of. These guys are the leader in the business world when it comes to processing power. Now like most people who are looking to purchase a laptop, you’ll most likely not need anything crazy in this department. The ‘brains’ of the computer are located in this little chip. If you’re just using your machine to browse the net or complete basic business tasks, you’ll won’t need anything higher than an Intel Core i5 processor.

Sure if you’re looking to edit and render video content on the regular, then grabbing yourself an i7 processor may be the way to go - or if you plan to work on intensive 3D programs, then this alongside a fancier GPU may be the way to go.
Brand - Made the Same, Supported Differently.
Now I know I said brand wasn’t the biggest deal in 2025 - it’s not due to the build quality as most devices are now built to the same standards, it’s actually down to something else.
The warranty is what is SO SO important. I’ve had customers purchase a device, then just under 2 years later, their device no longer turns on… you go to contact the company (which can be a nightmare if not done right) and they’ll tell you you’re out of luck… You’re now stuck forking out cash on a brand new laptop, just for it to do the same thing again.
There are three brands of device that have, hands down the best warranty systems.
Dell, Lenovo and Microsoft.

All three of these brands offer you the ability to purchase extended warranties on device that will usually have them come to a location of your choosing to repair the device. Not only are you having to pay for the new parts, you’ll usually be back up and running within the week.
But Dan! There are still a few more things I’m unsure about!?!
Yes, I know purchasing a device is daunting, and you’re always feeling like you’re being upsold by the store attendant. I understand that it’s a large investment for most, so I’m here to make sure you have peace of mind, and are getting the best value and security for your money.
